I think your background here completely overpowers the roses which in themselves are quite a stiff composition. There is so much detail in the background that the leaves get lost. As with your watercolours you need to be braver at using tone. I wonder if you actually do a tonal sketch before starting to paint. It would help. If you are working from photographs try removing the colour from them to see where the tonal range is.
