I prefer this to the colour version...perhaps it's because it's monochrome but it seems to have more impact..very effective image.

I also like the monochrome more: freer brushwork and deeper contrasting values. I just hope that my second attempt in colour will be more successful than my initial stab at it. I was a bit "rusty" with my brushwork when I undertook it (have not painted in a while). Hopefully, on my next attempt I will be less inhibited by caution not to create mud, and will get my tones more true to the monochrome version.

This is a preliminary study in black and white for the Wisteria Cottage. I used it to paint the same picture in colour. I have to say it was a liberating experience doing it in black and white. I did not have to worry about mud. It allowed a more free brushwork to come out which I did not realise was there. I would love to have achieved the same freedom of brushwork in my coloured version. But the constrains of creating "mud" (as I was using 3 primaries + Phtalo blue for wisteria) did keep me in constant check. I will have another go at the picture in colour. It was a good stepping stone.
