Cellar with Figure
In Amsterdam's wonderful Rijksmuseum is a small and 'modest 'painting by Johan Weissenbruch, of a cellar scene but with a 'through view' to a room beyond and a figure in the background. Apparently the weather was too foul to paint outdoors so he told his wife that he was going to paint the cellar. I imagine the conversation like this...Him...It's too wet to paint outside so I'm going to paint the cellar. Her...Good idea Johan, It hasn't been decorated for years! Imagine her surprise when he emerged some hours later with a new canvas....We arrived home from a freezing Holland to a cauldron of heat which made painting outdoors impossible. We don't have a room with a through view but we do have a cellar. The conversation here was something like this....Her....You can't possibly paint in the garden with this heat. Me....you're right. I'm going down to the cellar to paint it. Her...Excellent idea. It hasn't been decorated for years! T
