Thank you for your comment Lewis. In answer to your question, on this particular piece of daubing I haven't used masking. Depending on what I'm painting I use it to preserve the highest lights because I like the crispness of the result. Having said all that I'm not adversed to using permanent white. I'm not a purist as you can tell.

I've tried masking and didn't like it much, and I'm definitely not a purist. I've never managed to get superb washes like this.
