A Polish officer, I see - this works rather well, not unlike one of those hand-coloured photographs you used to see: it gives the painting a suitably "period" feel. Between Hitler and Stalin, so many of Poland's intelligentsia were exterminated - Catholic, Jewish, socialist, aristocrats, workers' leaders, political figures.... one could despair of humanity altogether: were it not for those like your grandfather, who resisted evil and paid the price for it.
