Incredible, I have this exact view in my porfolio! Although the houses are painted in bright colours- I went in 2005, and your viewpoint is slightly to the right, it's unmistakeable. What intrigues me is that you have a tower in the distance which is not there at all in mine, I wonder what happened? I made a mess of the right hand path, but yours is good and I like the movement you have captured with the figures in the scene.

Thanks, Leslie. The church tower in the background is made up. I felt that it gave the painting better balance, so put it in. In reality, it would be stuck in the middle of the lagoon! You are the first person ever to notice, so well done! I need to go back and capture some of the new colours, as I suspect it is now more interesting than when I visited. I've seen your version and as you say, we were standing in the same spot!

24" x 36". I painted this back in 2003 but it still seems very popular with people, so I thought I would include it in this portfolio. In 2002 I took my wife to Venice during April for her 50th Birthday. We bought a one week waterbus pass and had a wonderful few days touring the city and soaking up the culture. Within the Venetian lagoon, there are a number of islands. One of these is Burano, which is a 40 minute boat trip from Venice. It has a totally different atmosphere from Venice's historic centre, thanks to the Buranese custom of painting houses in bright colours - a tradition that may have had its origins in the colour schemes of local fishing boats. This scene is taken from in front of the Chiesa di San Martino looking down Fondamenta di Terranova. Since our visit, several of the houses have been repainted in different colours, notably the brick one on the left, which has been rendered and painted a rich blue.
