a lovely loose painting, i like the folk story and the figures :-) the word 'smugglers' always reminds me of Enid Blytons stories of the Famous Five :-)

From sketches taken when the weather was warmer . Weybourne has alot of unusual equipment on the top of its steep shingle beach. Folklore has it that smugglers would be alerted to the customs or coastguards by watching the local mill sails. If they were moving around then the coast was clear and if they were stopped making a shape of a cross it meant that they could not land there .
