The light of knowledge This oil painting is a symbolic depiction of the conquest of the darkness of human weaknesses by the light of spiritual wisdom. The central character is the Indian woman carrying the traditional lamp or Kuthuvillakku to light up her home, cupping her graceful fingers protectively around the little flame. It appears that in return for this gesture, the lamp sheds its beautiful golden glow over her, dispelling the darkness which shrouds the night and infusing her little home with happiness and contentment. The rich hue of her silk saree, her shimmering ornaments and her smiling countenance all appear to be touched by a divine radiance. The impenetrable darkness of the night provides the contrast to the soft glow of the lamp which appears to light up the entire canvas. Every corner of the house seems aglow with the light of happiness and spiritual contentment even as the light of knowledge illuminates the soul by conquering human failings. Size: 24”x18” (60x40cms.) New2012. Unframed. Rolled. Oil on canvas. Signed …
