It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical mangrove forests, and subtropical or tropical moistmontane forests. Genus generally merged with Anthreptes in the past, but distinctive tongue morphology unique within family; possibly warrants placement in separate family or subfamily. 10–11 cm; male 8•2–9•1 g, female 8•6 g. Male nominate race is dark with brilliant emerald-green iridescence above; upperwing blackish. Song a shrill rising trill ending in short double note, followed by descending trill .
