Wet Day on Briggate

Wet Day on Briggate

I love the dark, carefully-controlled rainy-day tones.

Super work Philip, can feel the cold and damp. Where abouts is this?

SM & SS Thank you for your comments. Briggate is a steep hill in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.

This is a delightful painting, Philip. You don't say so, but I take it to be watercolour....If I am right, and I would love to know.....then this work proves that watercolour can be a very strong medium, often with a similar power to oils and acrylics, and not the wishy-washy prerogative of Victorian ladies (see Forum) as is often assumed. An amazing medium. I love the way you have handled this piece of work, and your Gallery is delightful too.

Ruth, yes, it is a watercolour which can be all the things you mention plus it is accessible indoors and out. Currently I am trying to achieve tonal precision.

The bank is difficult to capture but you have managed that beautifully including the detail and the light. Love those shiny roofs.

Philip, I do like your paintings and the subject matter you choose. Love the restricted palette and feeling of greyness in this one.

Another great picture from you Philip enhancing an ordinary scene into something special.

Another lovely painting Philip. I think the palette that you use really works well.

Philip, if by tonal precision you refer to what I usually think of as "contrast" this work ticks all the boxes for me. It was the sharp plus the subtle contrasts in tone which drew me so strongly. I have been deliberately working in fairly consistent tones in an almost poster style for some time now...an illustrative narrative style which is somewhat flat but which suits my purpose and had all but forgotten the joy of tonality.

Extremely clever watercolour - the tonal values most successful here in portraying dull light.

A powerful piece of work Philip, super.

A lot has been said, I just love the painting!
