Very nice tonal painting Philip, I think they often have more impact than works in colour. I've painted this view a couple of times and know its a tricky subject. I did a sketch on a summer day a couple of years ago and a man approached me who owns the barge, He seemed to think it was a bit of a cheek me sketching it without his permission!

Very accomplished. It has a wonderful period - almost sepia - feel to it.

Yes this is really good Philip, what a lovely scene you have portrayed sp well here

Indeed lucky dad, I'm sure he will be thrilled. Love the tonal work, even though it's a dark hue, it has lots of light.

Philip - this image really captivated me when I saw it on the gallery. As a novice watercolourist, can I ask if this is produced purely from a diluted black? Thanks

Thanks for all the comments. Bill, I was going to produce the painting using lamp black only to find I didn't have any. So I used Sepia and French Ultramarine. I converted the scanned image to greyscale as it was a photo taken in bad light. I'll get a better quality scan done and re-post.

Impressive Philip, very well done, love it and agree that a tonal study does have an appeal all of its own when so well done. Seasons greetings.

Thanks for the comments. Hopefully 2013 will be a more productive year for me!!

I think that's what they're called. My day was born in one of these almost 80 years ago... I will present him with it on 27th December - his birthday!
