Dorset Elms

Dorset Elms

The great elms are gone, but the species isn't entirely dead yet - they still pop up, in shrub form, and some are growing. You and I will never see the like of these trees again, but maybe your grandchildren will (mine won't; haven't got any....). Interesting too that you've got your elm against a background of rapeseed - or so I assume. We very rarely saw them like that, when we had them, because rape wasn't commonly grown. You've imagined them in a more modern landscape - and it does show what we've lost thanks to those blasted beetles. I like this: hope it will encourage people to plant trees again - maybe even the occasional elm, in more out of the way places.

Lovely pastoral painting Geoff! The Elms here in America have been pretty much wiped out by Dutch Elm disease. Another tragedy that has finally produced some resistant specimens. The big beauties are all gone however.

What a lovely painting Geoff. A great composition too, Superb!

This is an oil painting based on the same view point as the watercolour Dorset Spring. I have taken a few liberties by introducing the late lamented and majestic English Elms and simplifying the buildings. 22" x 16"
