Not bad at all Peter, in fact damn good.

Thanks Derek.

Wow Peter...this is marvelous! Love everything about it, especially the buildings.

You've done well with this Peter. Its a good exercise to copy works by other artists to discover how they did things and Rowland Hilder was particularly good.

My thanks, Fiona and George, for your kind words.

Lovely painting and great detail Peter

You have certainly caught that Hilder style Peter, he was a great draughtsman.

I had a couple of books by Rowland Hilder, which I sold when I moved, thinking I'd be easily able to replace them - sadly not yet: please someone, re-publish them (in hardback: hate paperbacks..).

I remember that he did use Indian ink (not always, though), also Lamp black, Payne's Grey, and Neutral Tint watercolour - the last of these he said he would be lost without. He's the only man I've yet encountered who could use black in watercolour without dirtying his colours - he made it transparent. He wasn't afraid of a bit of white gouache, either. I've tried - failed with Ivory Black, which just deadened my paint, but Lamp Black is a different kettle of fish. Obviously I've got nowhere near to the great man, certainly not as near as you have, but I'd never have thought of using it without his advocacy of it - it is worth a try.

You're right to be pleased with this.

My thanks to Dennis, Stephen and Robert for your positive encouragement. It's appreciated.

Hi everybody. Finally finished this. This was a challenge I set myself to see how accurately I could reproduce the great mans work. I’m pretty pleased with the result. Darks have been achieved using no black ink, as I believe Rowland Hilder did use ink. It took quite a few hours altogether. If you are interested in seeing the original just google ‘Preston Mill Rowland Hilder’.
