"LE NORMAND" (The Norman)
This is painted in W & N Griffin Alkyd oil (quick drying) on a 60cm x 50cm canvas panel. It depicts a Norman nobleman in the days before the Norman conquest of England – 1066 and all that! The photo was actually on a publicity leaflet handed to me outside a theatre in Arles in the south of France by the gentleman in question, in full costume, and advertising a play about the Normans in Britain. Although he was no more than a bit player, he was seemingly photogenic enough to take centre stage on the flyers. While I did not go to see the play, I did have an interesting enough conversation with him to want to do his portrait – even if I did struggle with his strong Provençale accent.
