I really wanted to have a go at drawing on black paper. I didn't realise how back to front this was going to be. Instead of drawing the values, as I always draw in tones rather than lines, I had to draw the highlights and ignore the dark shadows - took me a while to get to grips with it. This is drawn with white and black charcoal on black Canson Mi Teintes pastel paper. The flowing glint of the skirts that the light catches create an angelic illusion of wings as the ballerina dances across the floor. The grace is captured sensitively with gentle strokes of charcoal that hint at her rather than drawn in full.
