Pat, I like these tree paintings and understand what you say about not wanting to get too much detail into them. This one is very effective.Which course with Martin did you do these on? I did a second course with him in March and I agree with you about his courses being very good - I found them to be a total inspiration.

This is super, Pat - lovely atmosphere and a very good balance of lights and darks and lost and found edges that create the all-important tension in a painting. Fab!

Thanks for your comment Jane. I couldn't find your portfolio (though I know I have commented on your work before) so replying here. I first went to Martin 3 years go on the beginners course, I was a complete novice then and hadn't ever tried oils - I learned lots! Martin is so knowledgeable and I like his atmospheric paintings. I bought a Gamblin starter set and started painting - then the following year did skies, then next year impressionists (both were excellent but all short 2 day progs). I sold everything I did there, so made the courses less expensive. This year I went in April for a returners 5 days. I found it quite a challenge and very tiring (I've never painted 5 consecutive days at once) - this was more about interpretation from a basic photo - we had a few to choose from - and it was amazing the different approaches from the group with a varied range of skills and experience. Several very good painters. Because I work, I have to use holiday time to go, so I go down there with husband and dog - I paint, he walks. We live in Yorkshire, so it's a bit of a trek but I'm so glad I found the painting school and a good B&B. I have asked Martin if next year he will consider doing portraits/figures etc. for a new challenge. I like painting outside so a course with a bit of outdoor work would be nice (though not a painting holiday as I like to be taught/advised). I shall go again next year, so hope he has something new to try. I think I preferred the impressionist one most of all, because I tend to paint too much detail, more like a photo and this made me step back a bit. From this April's course, I now have 4 tree paintings to frame! I'm just a hobby painter, just wish I had more time to paint. Might see you there next year Jane!

I really like the light and colours in this painting. Well done

Pat, good to know you've enjoyed MK's courses so much. I'll keep a look out for his next year's programme, and who knows, we might meet up!

Really enjoying your series of tree's Pat, again I like the lost and found edges.

Thanks so much for your kind comments Jane, Fiona, Glennis, Paul & Seok

Hello Pat, thank you for such nice comments about my paintings. I'm not on this site as frequently as I used to be as I'm so busy with so many other things! So I miss quite a lot of postings. How I've missed yours I don't know. I certainly like this gallery and will visit your others too. I am also a hobby painter and like you I'm learning all the time. Haven't tried oils yet but do have a starter pack that someone bought. Happy painting!

Really lovely painting Pat, I love the palette colours

20" x 24" oil on canvas. I seem to have been painting a lot of trees recently but not really, I've just had a couple of weekends to finish about quite a few paintings started several months ago. I started this tree series on four canvases at Martin Kinnear's Norfolk Painting School two months ago (really good courses) but most needed a bit more work when I got home.
