Very unusual. Where did you see it?

Response to Dave Patch: The subject is a mixed plantation on the Yorkshire Wolds as seen across a very steep, narrow valley. The dark area at the bottom is shadow from trees on the nearside of the valley which are back-lit by a low winter sun.
