Lovely work Michael looks like you stepped in very nicely for the absentee demonstrator! And your right about that boulder, I certainly wouldn't want to lay on a beach towel in front of it!

Thank you Ros, I did enjoy painting with the palette knife - it's quite liberating and fast (this was done in around 60 minutes) - not at all like the meticulous detail applied to mixed-media & collage that I have been doing of late.

Wow ! Oh to be able to paint as freely !

I don't think that you can help yourself when you're using a palette knife - it just turns out 'loose'! Mind you, I did use a brush for the under-painting which was of complementary colour (you know, orange for the sky, red for the grass etc) - it gets a bit tricky trying to work out what colour to use for the complementary of the rocks but in the end I just put in some very dark colour for the deep shadows to throw the rocks out in relief. Have a go, and don't forget to keep stepping back!

Great painting Michael and very brave of you to do a demo! I have used palette knives a lot during this past year and just love them because as you said you cannot help yourself . That cliff is beautifully painted and the colours are lovely.

Thank you Satu. I do think that if you start off with an under-painting of complementary colour, then the colour on top does 'jump out' at you just because of the parts of the painting where the palette knife has missed and left the under-painting exposed - have you tried this approach?

I painted this last night at the club. I had to step in for the demonstrator who didn't turn up. The subject was 'coast/cliff scenes in acrylic by palette knife' and this painting is from a photo of a huge boulder that is precariously balanced - in fact if we ever get an earth tremor in this part of Cornwall it will come down! In my photo there is a beach towel directly beneath the boulder - obviously belonging to someone without my sense of fear!
