Another sketch from the weekend

Another sketch from the weekend

It always shows when a sketch is done quickly as it has a liveliness that often gets lost when one starts on the 'proper' drawing or painting. I also think that when sketches are done in this way you get the honest gut reaction to a subject which will be the thing to refer back to when you launch into the final work. Look forward to seeing what this progresses into.

I very much agree with Thea's thoughtsm uch better source than a photo, look forward to seeing the painting,

Really like this Michael for exactly the same reasons mentioned above.

I prefer this one michael, loose and relaxed but with all the info that you need.

Agree with you on sketches as opposed to photos (like this one, by the way, and hope to see the painting you make from it); I do compromise a bit here - take a photo, then do a sketch from that photo and work exclusively from the sketch. It improved my work a lot when I first did that - you might try to escape the flattened out tones of the photo, but it's extremely hard to do.

Thanks all - the picture will follow - will be painting tomorrow so I hope to find time to do it then.

Great sketch Michael, loose and free. Look forward to seeing the painting.

I really like this, Michael. Agree with Thea that it is really lively and it captures a lot of atmosphere and mood.

A great sketch Michael, well captured.

The same bridge as my last posting (Millers Bridge on the canal to Loughborough) but from the other side this time. This one done very quickly with a 2B pencil - about 5 mins - I do like sketching this way and there is enough info to do a nice loose painting from it. I do have a photo but I doubt if I will refer to it as this is only likely to tighten up the result.
