Just goes to show how much we observe - or don't observe! It was only when I got home and looked at the photo that I realised that the bridge was painted in such a light green which really did reflect in the water in the same colour but in more intense tones - or at least it does in the photo.

Lovely and so serene.

And a very well painted one, whether it is pen and wash or watercolour.

Thanks Janet and Stephen - this has only just been painted and looking at it on screen I might intensify the darks in the reflections especially under the bridge.

You are totally right on your observations it's definitely watercolour thought the same myself Many times and this gem illustrates the fact perfectly. A great watercolour Michael superb

Like lots Michael.

I really like paintings done with pen and ink / watercolour - this one's lovely, Michael - and I agree that the term 'pen and wash' is overused!

Great as usual, Michael. This is a pen and 'watercolour'! In my opinion, pen and wash is when I use watersoluble ink and give it a wash with pure water to add some accents to the drawing.

Thanks all for your comments. If the painting would stand up on its own without the penwork is another way of looking at it. Perhaps I should have raised this in the forum,

I think it would look more interesting if you had a boat or barge going by and perhaps a bus going over the bridge but apart from that it is a nice painting. Well done.

A great painting Michael and as you rightly say it's definitely a pen and watercolour. Being fairly new to all this painting lark I've often wondered why it is called pen and wash.

Beautifully detailed, Michael. A lovely painting.

Majestic and so beautifully drawn Michael! Love it!

Thanks Fred, Margaret, Ellen and Satu. I think You are right Fred but the photo was devoid of any forms of transport and without reference material I was a bit loathe to add it in for fear that I might get it wrong - suppose I could have searched for something on the internet but too late now.

Well captured Michael, not easy with those complicated buildings and the perspective but you've done a wonderful job.

What's in a name anyway when it is as good as this Michael.

Pen and watercolour - 18 by 14 ins. Why do they use the term 'Pen and Wash'? when it is more than just a few washes - its more than that - it's a watercolour than happens to have been drawn in pen first.
