Bronte sisters by Peter Smith

BRONTE SISTERS 800

I recall seeing that program and the painting. Probably safe to say it’s of historic interest if not artistic quality. I like your version much, much more.

I meant to say I saw the actual painting in the National Portrait Gallery.

Fabulous painting of The Bronte sisters, strangely enough I am reading Wuthering Heights and fond of the Bronte sisters works , lovely tribute to these famous writers of classical literature.

A good version Peter, you gave yourself a tough challenge!

A very alluring painting Peter, super

This is very good Peter.

Mauve was coming into fashion in the Victorian era - they'd recently discovered how to make it; I have a book about it somewhere on my dusty shelves. So I don't think you need worry about that, and anyway, it doesn't matter really, does it? You're doing a study of the brother's portrait, which was mostly rather dingy colour, as I recall - and while it's very good to have a record of the sisters, their brother wasn't going to win any art prizes. A good effort, and while you've not attempted to model the flesh tones - their brother hadn't either. Can't help wondering what the girls said to their brother when they saw his effort!

I watched a programme about the Bronte's the other night and it showed the painting of the three sisters done by their brother. I thought it might be fun to do my own version; I've deliberately kept the look of the original as much as possible with no animation in their expressions. On the left is Ann, in the middle Emily and Charlotte on the right. It did cross my mind that a purple dress might have been a bit too expensive in those days but I've done it now.
