'Grouse Moors, Wharfedale'

Weather, wind, space. I'd like to make a disapproving comment about grouse shoots, but I'm rather fond of grouse.... Your painting is full of atmosphere.

The moors and fells above Bolton Abbey and Barden in Wharfedale, Yorkshire Dales are part of the Devonshire Estate and the area is managed and maintained for seasonal game shooting. At this time of year, on the days the moors are open for public access, a walk is regularly punctuated by the sudden appearance of grouse as they rise up from the heather with a flurry of wings. They then fly off just above the ground with their distinctive call - Gurrrrrrrrrrr! Geback! Geback! - before disappearing once again into the heather. Mixed media. 14.5" x 10.5"
