'Fountains Abbey'

I went up to Harrogate some years ago for a housing conference, we all took a break and visited the Abbey, and I painted it from almost exactly the same spot as this - wonder if I can find it, it was only postcard sized. Your painting is a lot more dramatic than mine was, and has something redolent of the sad history of the building about it - ie, its wanton destruction. Quite a haunting image.

The dramatic abbey ruins at Fountains are the largest monastic ruins in the country and are now owned and maintained for the benefit of all by The National Trust. Set in the naturally beautiful Skell valley near Ripon in North Yorkshire, flanked by two vast expanses of lawned grass with awe inspiring cliff faces to either side and the river Skell running through the valley and under The Abbey - which in itself is a masterpiece of twelfth century building ingenuity - this truly is a beautiful place to visit. Acrylic on canvas 20" x 16"
