Howick Village Hall by Marjorie Firth

Looking at it now, I’ll add some stronger directional lines on the road. Pity we can’t replace the image as we used to be able to.

Like that a lot and in a beautiful part of the country!!

It is excellent Marjorie, the darks and shadows are done so well. The windows and doorway look really well drawn. The road looks fine and does me not take away from the hall, the greens look ok and again done distract from the building. ,

Nothing wrong with the greens, Marjorie, very contrasting. Great play of sun and shadow. Well done.

Very good Marjorie. Reminds me of a village hall I painted a few years ago for an exhibition there. Where would we be without our little village halls!?

Thanks, David, Paul, Mia and Tessa - village halls are clinging on! I love them, I like the link to the past.

Excellent work.

Lovely Marjorie. I think your greens are fine and the shadows are great.

Think it has worked very well Marjorie, lovely work

It looks a lovely place to have an art club. I've been wondering if an art club would do me some good anyway, lovely painting Marjorie.

Thank you Romila, Christine, David and Denise - art can be quite a solitary interest so it’s nice to connect with other artists. But you have to see if it suits you, clubs can vary.

Almost missed this one, Marjorie. It is a great result. I like much the flowers and the foliage. You have a very nice art club.

Looks a lovely place to be.

Thanks Cesare, c’è come un posto dal passato, in mezzo della campagna, molto tranquillo. Thanks Sylvia, it is, it’s used by a small community…we have one in our village but not so charming.

I really like the effects of the oil pastels here Marjorie. Must try that surface. Haven’t any oil pastels here in Spain so will have to wait until I return home to try out acrylics with oil pastels. Love the olde worlde look and the open windows on the right giving the place a lived in appearance.

Good one Marjorie, like your use of greens in this composition

Thank you, Carole, Michael and Heather. The canvas pad is “ one up” from oil paper, I like it to paint on too.

Greens look fine to me. Very painterly.

Thanks Linda. Where are your paintings? Aren’t you doing much at the moment?

I remember another painting you did, I think, of the same village hall but in oils Marjorie. I loved that version if I remember, and this is excellent also. My classes start up again next week…..in another village hall, god bless em……I’m so excited!

You’re right, Fiona, I did do an oil - a better result but this was using oil pastels…I do like them. Funnily enough, I was wondering where you were…no paintings posted for a while. I wish I had a tutor to lead me, it opens up more possibilities.

I can’t wait to get back to class, I’m drifting and picking up bad habits. Davy has an exciting agenda for the next twenty weeks, two terms of ten weeks taking us up to Easter. Two weeks spent dissecting, discussing and studying a still life artist from the mid-nineteenth century and onwards. Exploring their palette, technique and creative influences. I’m really looking forward to it.

This is part of the hall where we hold our art club. On Monday I started this outside, acrylic base then oil pastels which were very soft in the sun. Finished it off this afternoon. It’s on a Belle Arti canvas sheet so I was interested how the pastel would lie - not bad but my fingernails need a good clean! Also, my range of greens is limited, so not exactly satisfactory.
