Morandi on the sideboard by Marjorie Firth

I love the still life paintings in your portfolio Marjorie. This one in particular is very appealing - just the kind of subject I would tackle myself? I really like the restrained colour which gives the painting harmony.

You have definitely got your light effects very well. Soft in both style and colour and soothing somehow.

Thank you both Gudrun and Julie. I'm back into Still Life mode again but I must get out out my oils, it's been a while and I'm putting off painting with them. Wonder if anyone else has these problems.

I keep coming back to this to see if my attitude changes with the days and it's the simplicity and unpretentiousness that makes it work. The soft tones and composition are excellent.I like Morandi too. I've only painted in oils but the medium wouldn't matter..confidence levels are rock bottom..every painting is the first... I neither recognise colours nor tones..as for technique? haven't a clue. First days are chaotic..paint everywhere and all wrong...too many errors, bad judgement. It's only after many hours of misery that things change but never with guarantees. But here's the thing...if you devote that much time to a project, failure is not an option. With acrylics and oils, you can rework until it's satisfactory, not necessarily 'right'! Painting Basia in the Lace Shawl wasn't difficult but took weeks of constant re working..failure is not an option. Just get on with it!

Yes, I love Morandi and he was in mind when I set these objects up on the sideboard. But the sculptural forms were not as important to me as the soft lights and reflections. I enjoyed doing this very much and it's definitely going to take me on a journey.
