Some people get absurdly frightened by these wonderful dogs, seeming to think they're pitbulls (I've met a couple of very friendly pitbulls, too): but one I met while waiting for my fish and chips a few weeks ago just wanted to climb all over me and wash my face.... Boss has a very macho collar on, but you've caught his intelligence and character very well.
