Great description of this painting Malcolm. Looks so isolated and bleak.

Thanks for that Carole, it can get very bleak, the Peak District is not a place to be caught out when it does turn bad if you do not know the area.

Great painting with a feeling of isolation and hidden meaning.

Thanks for that Richard, is nice when someone seems to get the feeling of what the painting is about.

This is one of the many millstones abandoned around and above Millstone Edge in the Peak District when the Industry virtually just stopped because of the importing of cheap French millstones. The stones range from ones that are only just starting to take shape from virgin rock to small rows of neatly stacked complted ones ready for shipment now nearly buried with soil over the many years that have passed. The particular stone in the painting is on the top of the edge as you walk away heading towards Howards Nick.. Anyone walking the high ground in winter will be aware how there seems to be no true sence of distance because of the flat light.
