I like this, Mike, especially the bold ink work - is it ink resist? (I'm struggling at the moment to make any progress with my further attempts at ink resist, think I'll leave it for a bit and go back to it later.)

Really like this. Love the palette, and the strong foreground darks...great sense of distance here.

Love the strong definition of the silhouetted trees and foreground shrubs Mike, and how they form a frame of the view beyond. Lucky you to have your own kiln! I have been toying with the idea of getting one, but it’s a big outlay and I don’t think I would spend the time doing pottery to justify the outlay. I can’t stick to the same thing for long periods of time, I get bored....and, I’ve just bought a printing press, so will have to save my pocket money up. A friend of mine has a kiln and she puts my stuff in when she wants to make up a kiln full. Can’t tell you what the glaze is on the Hosta leaves, she mixes them, I just asked for a green! Lol

Thanks for the kind comments. Jenny , this is a combination. The trunks, main branches , roof, hills and foreshore were achieved with the ink resist. The foliage and twigs added with the matchstick - and that included embellishing the foreshore foliage as well , especially the cabbage tree to the left corner. Sky and sea are watercolour (white caps - gouache) , top foliage enhanced with gouache , hills and foreshore combination of watercolour and gouache. Fiona , the kiln and wheel have sat waiting to be used for at least three years. It is as large as I can get without having to go to 3 phase power - a big small one so to speak. Bought it 2nd hand when I was going to pottery classes but painting holds top sway for spare time usage (and reading). Also have a small printing press that requires to be used more often than it is. When I retire ! Thanks Lewis - I stick to a very limited palette. Force of habit from work - use minimal number of colours when colour matching.

Beautiful light Mike. I used to know Kaikoura quite well so can relate to this scene. Afraid to go back since the earthquake though.

Hi Sandra. We stayed overnight on the way down but drove through on the trip back to Picton. Not overly familiar with the place but it didn't look obviously damaged. We were told that there had been over 10.000 slips counted in the mountains there about. The road in and out is where one can see the results of the quake and they are still working on them - and will be for some time yet I would think.
