Louise I've had a gander through your portfolios so to speak you obviously love the area you live, hail from and it shows in your work. I really love your loose style I TRY hard to be loose and translucent but I keep returning to painting too thickly in watercolours which then looks more like it's painted in gouache or acrylics. I particularly like your Thomas Street with the bold red building's that's the way to go! Take a wee look at mine and see what I mean. Good stuff

Lovely line and wash ,particularly like the detail of the anchor.Thankyou for your feedback always appreciated

Louise, I love your lively and spontaneous "sketches of the day"! Well done, they are beautiful!

Many thanks Philip (hope I've been of some help), David and Mia. I appreciate your comments on these quick sketches!

I just feel like popping in for a pub lunch! Love the whole feeling of the sketch - the quick impression, the energy and the super colours. I shouldn't bother sweating blood over a painting that takes days as these are much more 'you' and showcase your talent brilliantly.

So agree with all of the above , your sketches are delightful. Have you found Urban Sketchers yet? If you are interested just google them.

Part of the attraction of your work is the palette - love the rose colours in this one which work so well with the lovely greys

Hi Louise i like this if i were you i would pursue this style it very attractive andhas great potential. I know from my painting it is harder to produce a piece of work like this than to produce a slavish photographic copy this is art the other is draughtsmanship . You have to take risks and be inventive you are one of my favourite artists on p o l. I can almost see you thinking of the next stroke . You have to go for it with these paintings often failing but when you get them right ad you have they stand out a mile . You are my tip for the top take care keep up the good work.

I agree with Dennis, this style of painting is much more difficult than more precise painting and you are very good at it.

They remind me a bit of John tookeys work like his they look deceptively easy . As Philip said when you try they don't work . That is in my view art . I love the mark making the subject is almost incidental

I agree with all the above. A demonstrator at the art club recently said that you have to paint in a way that you love. He has changed from a very accurate style to a semi abstract one in acrylics. He said that many people who had bought his earlier work were disappointed but he could not force himself to produce that style just to sell. Perhaps this sketchy style is more you? The artist is Paul Brotherton by the way, If you are interested, he has a web site.

Thanks Stephen. For once I know the artist you mention. I've seen his earlier work in a Manchester gallery where I exhibited a couple of times. What he said to you is very interesting. Some of my earlier 'cottage on hill' patchwork type paintings used to sell quite well but I can't force myself to paint like that again just because they are more commercial. I just can't do it, and have to move on. The trouble is that a lot of my paintings now look to me as though a different artist has painted them. I can't stick to a recognizable style, it's the excitement I feel of producing something different. I get bored easily! Thank you everyone else for your extraordinarily kind comments which have knocked me sideways and made my day!!

Another wonderfully atmospheric and spontaneous piece, Louise! Bold, rich and powerful.

I'm glad that you are doing these pen and wash paintings Louise as they are superb. Also picking up on some of the comments regarding how that it is far more difficult to paint and draw loose rather than a tight painting - I totally agree. When I was younger I painted very tight images which were actually a lot easier to produce (it's nothing to do with how long it took). Going back to your image I think that you have found a lovely balance between wet on wet, dry brush, and ink drawing and would love to see a couple of flowers paintings like this?

Thank you Seok and Joseph, you had to throw that bit about flowers in as a parting shot didn't you?...LOL...You know how I am, I'll have a go..

Wonderful Louise. These sketches are so good and remind me very much of work by jerry waese only he uses oil pastes to achieve the same effect in his urban scenes.

Thanks Frank. I looked him up and must say that I do like his work.

As usual I am late to the party, but I agree with the above comments. Carry on. My quest for making a portrait sketches fell by the wayside, for now, so I appreciate the gusto with which you do these.

Lovely to see a picture of you along with your article in the January edition of The Artist :)

This is fast becoming a 'daily sketch' but I do like to pick up the paint brush most days!
