This is one of many paintings I did in the Savill Garden Virginia water. I used a pallet knife to paint the bridge to give the grainy effect to the wood, as gouache tends to give a flat surface. This method also helps to add contrast and texture to the painting to show the ridged wood against the soft reeds and flowing water under the bridge.
