GOUACHE Qtr Imperial 300gsm Hahnemule wc paper Pebeo & Reeves, with W & Newton Process White Gouache. Finished 31 March 12 I chose this ref for 3 reasons 1/ I wanted a huge challenge 2/ I have wanted to do a street scene for ages 3/ I love France and it reminded me of a weekend in Paris. The ref (by skappy aka Robert) was a tough one because of the huge advertising board that totally obscured anything behind it. Also there were bits of cars/traffic and I couldnt' quite work out what they were etc. So I decided to use my imagination and 'make it my own' by missing these out. As I continued I realised I had a massive space in the centre that I couldnt' see behind the ad board. I played with klines of perspective from what I could see of the foreground building. I had to think about what to put in there as that little gap about 3 " tall and 1" wide would seriously affect that whole painting if I got it wrong. Using my memory of France I decided to extrapolate the lines of perspective but could not find one clear vanishing point so this was tricky and I had a mass of lines drawn and couldn't rmember what to use - I got in an awful muddle. I decided to just use 'feel' and go for it and keep the lines and colours vague to give a sense of distance. Having looked at it there was a gap bottom right that seemed 'wrong' - so I added a dog disappearing out of the picture at the corner.
