Your portrait of. Arez is a beautiful as he is. And all too often we hear these sad stories. Why do we assume we have this right to cage animals for our own gratification. I'm glad this noble creature had a happy out come. You have a very nice gallery

Thank you for your comment. The lions in Romania were all cramped up in one tiny cage. They asked for help as they couldn't cope and the poor things had no space. Yorkshire Wildlife Park offered to help and the BBC covered their experience of moving there. The wildlife park has a lovely open space and the three prides each have their own area with water features, mounds and trees to be like a true environment. We see them via a walk through area between the prides. They seemed quite content. http://www.yorkshirewildlifepark.com/#!meet-the-animals/c1sfj

Thanks for the link, Lin.

.....and after painting the lioness I thought she looked lonely and could do with a mate. So last night the pastels came out again. I painted this from a close crop of one of my own reference photos. This is Ares, one of the lions rescued from a Romanian zoo, seen all over the country on BBC TV. He and his pride are one of three at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, where they live happilly in a beautifully large landscaped enclosure. Done on Sanded 500 grit paper Approx 12" x 9 " Nupastel, Conte and a few mixed others. June 2014
