Thanks so much Heather and Hillary, using soap was a new one for me but good fun to play around with. The soap makes the watercolour spread and forms lovely textures. Thanks Carole, I deviated from the reference a bit to make the flow work a bit better.

I came across this tip for creating texture by using a bar of soap and brushing it into wet washes. I gave it a go in the leafy undergrowth in this painting to see how it might work. The effect is subtle enough not to distract from the overall image and added some nice textural effects for the leaves. I kept the overall painting quote loose and gestural.
