Painting Project Artist Colin Steed's comments. Good composition Shelagh, two trees to the right and one on the left and the distant tree is off centre. I am not a lover of using black although some artist make it work. I would mix a dark colour with blue, browns and red myself for the dark forground trees. This would give you warm blacks that helps give a snow scene warmth. Keep your brushe strokes running across the foreground. The use of vertical brushe strokes make the ground drop away rather than laying flat. Other that that a good job Shelagh.

Shelagh Doran sent her acrylic version of the January painting project saying: 'I used acrylics on a 8" square deep edged canvas. The colours used were: cobalt blue & cadmium yellow with burnt umber for the deep browny greens, burnt umber and a touch of black for the trees, titanium white to start the snow, then adding small dips into a mix of cobalt blue & rose madder for shadowy tones- some darker than others - which gradually built up the snow. I used angle 1 for a basis of a sketch and took 2 steps to the left to alter the view of the distant fields. The trees were drastically pruned and I changed the sky to early on a frosty morning to add a lot of light. The hardest part was the right amount of shadow as early morning light doesn't give too much, and then when to stop'
