Brian, when you have a busy foreground like this, it is a good idea to keep your sky simple. One way to do this is , before you paint anything, mix up a descent amount of Winsor Blue (red shade). Now, turn your paper upside down and wet the whole of the sky area including the mountains and around the cottage. Just brush in your mix with the paper flat leaving plenty of white paper.......let dry. Hope this helps Dave

Yes as Spencer said well painted

Hi Brian, you've created good contrast between the cottage and hills behind. This combined with the nicely rendered foreground has produced a strong painting. Perhaps next time don't concern yourself with the sky, keeping it as simple as possible, unless it's a major part of your painting. My step by step watercolour is in the August issue of LP.

Brian Matthews sent in his project saying: 'I found the sky particularly difficult in watercolour. However it was a most enjoyable subject'
