I was surprised when I saw this one, and recognised this as yours. It's a lot more detailed and "accurate", in contrast to what you normally do. This is a commission so one has to take that into consideration. However, you have still retained your usual fluidity in this and your colours sing. Excellent.

Steve, I think you have got this just right and it is the strength and warmth of the composition that is so attractive. My eye was immediately drawn to it and it demonstrates well the versatility of the medium . I seldom log on, but have done so just so that I could leave a comment. I should think that your client will be very pleased with that.

This is a real eye-catcher, Steven. This is not 'chocolate box' at all. The colours you used, although Van Gogh (with GH) is the student quality of the Rembrandt brand, they are sparkling. I often use them (amongst other, artist quality paints) and I am very pleased with them. Super painting!

I don't think it's chocolate box - you've caught the impression of weathered stone, and the mass of the castle is more than enough to carry the painting way beyond the clichéd choccy box look. (Incidentally, I think chocolate box has its place now and then, but this wasn't your intention, nor have you been seduced by the trap.)

I have been asked to paint a series of Welsh Castles...This is the first! Colwyn castle North Wales. Do you think it's a bit "chocolate box"? It's a watercolour 15 by 25ins approx Bockingford paper and Van Goch paints...Thankyou so much for all your comments on my earlier paintings, it's such a great help.
