Caligula’s profile is widely recognisable, from these few simple strokes. It’s amazing how our mind fills in the gaps when using negative space. Caligula was Emperor of Rome for only 4 years from 37AD, before being assassinated by his Praetorian Guards. Tyrian Purple was a highly prized dye from antiquity. Made by the Phoenicians at Tyre, for the exclusive use of Emperors in Rome & Byzantium, it was very costly to extract, from the mucous of predatory sea snails.
