Your progressing nicely Karyn, this is a good composition, I would have liked to see the distant fields a lighter tone, ie. 'aerial perspective', it's lacking a bit of contrast, but a great effort for a newcomer, you have talent.

Hi Alan, Yes I totally agree. I think the painting is too 'beige' really.

It's never easy to criticise another artist's work, they can take it the wrong way, but it was more of an observation, and of course said so it may help you. Remember also that trees and distant objects take on a shade of blue the further they are away. It's only minor detail, but vital detail Karyn, the devil is in the detail as they say, and this is so true in painting.

However, your work is rather exceptional considering the time you have been painting, well done indeed.

Alan is very correct in commenting this way and constructively so and you taking it on board Karyn.
My added comment is that the scattered bales are slightly large and too distinctive.
Drawing and colour choice is smack on.

Hi Derek,

Ah, yes the bales. At least you recognised them as bales. When I took it to get it framed the lady in the shop thought they were sheep! Certainly stops you getting smug. I appreciate all the tips I get. This is a great forum with lots of talented and experienced contributors.

I hadn't seen this before - and I recognized the objects as bales too - they could be sheep; it doesn't actually matter: take a look out of the window of the bus, and they do look remarkably similar from a distance. I think this is absolutely brilliant considering how short a time you've been painting: and this painting would have worked even if you'd cut it in half lengthwise - the house is just right, positioned perfectly and looking just as farm houses or farm cottages do. I'm not even bothered by the aerial perspective issue; you don't have to observe it, but if you don't it's probably as well if you know you're not doing so; Alan's advice is therefore very good: I wouldn't say the painting was a bit beige, but in places the tones are slightly problematic. Even so - it still deserves to sell, and I bet you could sell it, in the right place. It has spaciousness, and invites the viewer in. I like your sky, too - you can have sunlight without the ubiquitous blue, and it's been delicately painted.

About the Artist
Karyn Fox

Have returned after a bit of a battle, since last December, with a surprise brain tumour. Had surgery, just before lockdown, to remove the sizeable critter and now need to get back to a bit of painting. So start off with a bit of iPad painting to try and get in the swing of things.
