Nice shading Judith and good use of reflection. White birds are the hardest to draw because they are never white. You've given this chap a full form. Especially like the hifghlight on the left of the bird. Great movement in the water surface too.

Lovely use of pastel pencil and, as Steve says, excellent highlights. Well done.

Oh JL you have been to Stanley Park [Vancouver BC?] too? and this is all it inspired you to paint? Having said that it is full of elegant charm with beautiful detail...I like it

Hi Phil, actually i took loads of photos and indeed have tried several watercolour paintings - unfortunately all were less than satisfactory so decided to try pastels. The park is fantastic - did you do any paintings? I looked in your gallery but didn't see anything from Vancouver.

Vancouver was pre-retirement. Yes I have the photos, I may one day get round to using them for a composition. This and the park are on our let's return wish-list.

A beautiful swan Judith

What a lovely relaxing painting, you have captured the light and shading on the swan and water perfectly, lets see more of your work please. PW

This is a fine Painting, very well done: James

This is a lovely painting, Judith. I find birds quite difficult to draw/paint. Are you living in Vancouver? Thanks for your comments on my gallery. The Island golf course is actually in North Dublin (Ireland). You wouldn't think it from the painting as we don't usually get such glorious weather! The golf course is so called because originally it could only be reached by boat but now can be accessed by road.I'm afraid I don't play golf myself but golf courses by the sea can have particularly nice views. In answer to your other question, I do sometimes paint the same scene or still life again and they don't always turn out the same as the original- sometimes better, but often worse! Have you any other work to upload? I'd love to see it.

Thank you so much for your valued comments regarding Morfa Benna, I'll do something about it. This painting of the swan is just beautiful, the reflection and water is stunning. I have only been painting since January of this year and am learning all of the time.

pastel pencil on medium blue smooth paper. Felt inspired by Pauline Hill's beautiful swan on the cover of Sept, issue LP to have another go at a photo i took way back in spring. When I have some proper acrylics I want to try again. The picture has come up lighter on the pc than in original. It is my second attempt - the first which I did soon after the holiday lacked contrast. This one is a little better.

About the Artist
Judith Laux

In 1990 I took up painting. As with so many amateur painters i started with water colours and visited a number of evening classes. Since then I have tried many media and am currently struggling with water-soluble oils. I find satisfaction in all the different media I have tried so far, (perhaps…
