Yet again a superb street scene. They seem to get better and better - although to my eye this is already just perfect. Love your palette Joseph, how do you get those darks so rich ?

Your work's quite stunning Joseph and this as good as they come.

Lovely golden light in this one Joseph. It takes a rare talent to make the streets of Manchester appear so attractive!

Take that back Stephen, our streets can look very attractive, when the sun's shining anyway..lol. This is so good Joseph, love the sparkling light effect on the road and all the interesting detail. Also, that car looks so shiny, really excellent work!

Also, your work should feature in the Artist mag . I for one would love to see a demo from you!

Excellent work again Joseph!

Wow Joseph! It takes me ages to look at your paintings, there is always so much to look at, not just the subject matter but the shapes and strength of paint and strokes. Brilliant!

A stunning piece of work Joseph, feels alive, great vision.

Another of your really exciting watercolours Joseph. Are there touches of gouache for some of the strong hue highlights. Yes a demo would be very instructive. Love to know if you start by soaking the paper and how you get these intense hues

This is just fabulous. Reminds me of the Autumn light we had in London when I lived there. The light on the bus and car are just excellent. Love to see a demo too.

Hello all, thank you again for your lovely comments - much appreciated. At some point I will try to get together some photographs of stages - maybe in a blog. Alan I don't use gouache but do sometimes use paint straight from the tube for small highlights (I try to avoid this if I can remember to not paint over the highlights. The intense colours are achieved by mixing complimentary colours in the dark shadows - mix burnt umber with ultramarine first to get a dark then mix in a little bit of the complimentary colour e.g. I have added some purple and alizarin crimson in the left window which intensifies the little yellow lights. Hope this helps a little.

Running out of superlatives, Joseph. This is amazing and shows great skill and vision as an artist. You should be making DVD's, writing books and teaching people.

Thanks for your answer to Alan's query, must try to remember to add complimentary's to those darks. So much to learn!

Thank you Gudrun. Thea that is one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me - thank you. I have been looking at book publishers over the last month to see how much it is to produce, I will let you know if I get a book out. Not sure about the DVD's or teaching as yet - maybe the future.

Glad I could be of help Stephen. PS the learning never stops (that's why I love it).

I meant every word very sincerely. A book would be great and a DVD would be even better. Perhaps contact Townhouse Films as they make excellent art DVD's and I know they would be blown away by your paintings.

Truly wonderful work, Joseph! Your mastery of the human form in action is marvelous. One of my favorites from your gallery.

The usual wonderful combination of subtle and bold touches. I stared at it for a while before realizing that the light source is exclusively reflected obliquely from the facade and windows: unusual and very effective.

Thank you Thea - I will have a look at Townsend films. Thank you Seok - I do love painting little figures. Kim thank you for your kind comment - I'm glad you realized that the light source is on the whole reflections, I have been keen to attempt something like this for a while.

Nice distinctive style. Refreshing and enjoyable.

Thank you Stephen - glad you like it.

Great lighting and contrast

Joseph thanks for the reply re your darks. But how you manage to preserve the small white shapes for the pure hues is beyond me. Will drop a hint to Townhouse.

Hi Joseph. I've just seen this one on the Patchings exhibition page. How did you find the experience? Delivery, cost and collection of work, should I be accepted that is..has always put me off entering these open competitions. I tried for the RA one year. Went down on the train (not cheap) with two big paintings and a daughter to help, queued up, spent a few weeks in a state of excitement, was rejected and then had to ask my other daughter in London to pick it up. I got in the Chester open one year. That one was accepted but didn't sell so came home again, I still have it! Another accepted in the Sale waterside open. Exhibited for a couple of months and had to picked up, again, no sale, me out of pocket. The whole idea of opens leaves me a little disillusioned which is why I'm asking how you found it all!

Hi Louise. I didn't make it to the exhibition due to being ill this weekend. It did cost me quite a lot of money to get the painting framed (£80) and couriered (and I still have to get it back). I have just entered 3 into the Sunday Times but don't know if they have been accepted. It is extremely costly and I may have to rethink a little lol. Yes it is very disheartening when you put all the effort in and get no return (breaks my heart sometimes). I have sold nothing and then had 3 snapped up within the first 5 minutes of the doors opening - so it really does depend on who sees the work. I suppose a cheaper option would possibly be to make a book or organize a frame free exhibition? It might be even worthwhile making a book?

Thanks Joseph. What were the courier costs and who did you use? Sorry about all the questions but I might enter next time. Very good luck with the Sunday Times. There's a small gallery in Manchester, Colin Jellicoe on Portland street who'd like your work and sells a reasonable amount of mine. Not a fancy gallery but he sells work and has been there for a long time!

Hi Louise. I think the courier was about £20. Thanks for the good luck for the Sunday Times (will need it lol). Thanks for the tip for the gallery in Manchester - will pop in sometime over the next couple of weeks.

Also, your framer is too expensive! Colin has had his gallery there for approx 40 years. He does mixed exhibitions, not solo, so would like some of your I'm sure.
