This is a super painting, great view and it works so well for the very reasons you have mentioned, great sense of depth with the more detailed brighter foreground and softer hazier distance, lovely work

On a visit to Oporto, I took some sketches and pictures of the barges in the harbour. I liked painting this scene as it gives the opportunity to create depth, with the bright strong colours in the forground and softer tonal value for the buildings in the background.
