Perranporth rock by Joe Butler

Strong painting with more believable greens; on the left the foam looks a bit too much like a frill at the edge of the sea, but I do understand how hard it is to get it right (and I often haven't). Transition between the blue and the white is a bit too sharp, and reflections into the sea would I think be more broken, if there were this much foam in the water. Lastly, I wonder if you're using black or Payne's Grey in your shadows, because they're very stark and a bit cold; would suggest mixing a green and red, or a blue and burnt sienna, or umber. All the same, a good impression of strong sunlight on an interesting scene.

Robert, thanks for the comments, yes the frill was a big mistake! hate it! I think the camera hasn't picked up the colours right. yes the reflections should be more broken. for me the colour mixing is the most difficult, but am enjoying it. best joe

So you've just been painting for a couple of months? In that case, you're doing fine - more than fine. Colour mixing is a struggle however long you've been painting, and the usual advice is to keep to a limited palette of colours, eg burnt sienna, crimson or quinacridone violent (aka permanent rose), cadmium red light, yellow ochre, raw sienna, cadmium yellow light, lemon yellow, pthalo green or viridian, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, pthalo or prussian blue. Throw in a bluer violet, for luck! You should be able to mix just about anything from that list, and the best way to gain experience is by trying out all the blues with all the yellows, the reds with the yellows, red plus green, blue plus red etc, on sheets of acrylic painting paper - label all the mixes, so you know what went into them. It's interesting to do & I think the best & quickest way to learn. Keep posting the pics - it's fascinating to watch especially new artists, as they progress over time. Good luck.
