The Chinese court painters used to paint like this - straight-on studies, with very little shading (because shadows weren't permitted to fall on the face of the Emperor). So you're in good company, and it's actually a quite expressive way of painting, if you can capture features and shapes - which you can. The western tradition likes more modelling, and particularly more shadow - but if it was good enough for the Quianlong Emperor......

Thanks a lot Robert for your kind comment about my autoportrait. I am very pleased that you have recognized my work, and what influences it.

I agree with Robert. This is wonderful. Very expressive without all the shadows etc. I like it!

Thank you so much Dawn, I really appreciate!
