Thank you Paul, Lewis and Heather. Will probably attempt the next portrait with charcoal (I dislike graphite’s sheen) and on better quality paper (this was drawn on WHSmith A4 sketching paper).

John Singer Sargent, a great portrait artist, regretted that “Every time I paint a portrait I lose a friend”. So, keen to try my hand at portraiture, I’ve started with someone who couldn’t be disappointed with the result. He died in 1883. Drawn with graphite pencils on A4 sketching paper.
