Thanks everybody for your encouraging comments - feedback (particularly positive!) is always truly appreciated. I actually painted the poppy and background many years ago and was not happy at all with the background. Fortunately I kept the painting. Recently, after doing a workshop using charcoal on watercolour, I decided to have another go at it using the charcoal to tone down the background and unify it with the poppy. I think it has worked - now I wish I'd painted the poppy even brighter. Anyway it just goes to show that you should never throw anything away!
