Ian, these are striking images; I would love to know how you began thses; didyou work from sketches on site?

Unfortunately I'm a bit long in the tooth for visiting places such as these and if I entered with a sketch pad or camera would probably be arrested given todays laws! I mentioned that my son wanted something bright and modern so the colour choice was mine. All the background was painted first with only an idea of the sort of painting I wanted to produce. The figures really appeared themselves on the left hand side and the painting as a whole evolved from my imagination. The composition of the right hand side was planned more and was completed after the LHS so I was looking to achieve difference yet balance. In most of my painting I have a "go with the flow" approach and hardly draw first at all and am quite happy to change a composition as I go along. Hope this helps. Ian
