Parliament Oak, Clipstone. by Ian Gordon Craig
Parliament Oak, c.1200 years old, marked the entry to the King’s royal hunting ground, Clipstone, 1180 - 1830. It was huge, but its hollow trunk has since been removed. What you see today is still one tree sharing the same roots. Some parliament sessions were held here. Ancient Barons met King John here to confront him with details of the Magna Carta. On another occasion King John rode from here to hang several Welsh boys during the Welsh uprising. He didn’t like being interrupted when hunting!
