Very atmospheric Ian

Can just feel that storm coming.

I can only add another “atmospheric painting” comment to this Ian. Not sure if it’s the palette, the subject or the mood you’ve injected into it, it’s very good.

Thanks for all of your comments, much appreciated. It would be an injustice to this eerie place if I painted it exactly how I saw it - hence the reason the en-plein air paintings never worked. It HAD to be a studio piece to convey the atmosphere it deserves.

I do love a good cemetery and this is a beauty. The textures of the church, headstones and grass, along with the light give this such atmosphere

Love the atmosphere

Inspired by Casper David Frederick's The Abbey in the Oakwood, this ruined church has enchanted me for 35 or so years, ever since I came across a photo in Richard Muir's excellent Shell Guide to the English Landscape. I have painted and sketched it en Plein air with little success, but here in this 8" x 10" I have finally scratched that itch. There's some narrative as the dried flowers on one of the graves attest to provide something a little bit extra.
