Land of the midnight sun

Well this is different from you Gudrun. It may be unfinished but does it need any more work on it? I think not.

Thank you for your appreciation, Stuart. Once I sign it it is finished. I just love this people cluster. I am sure to develop this image more as I delve into the themes from the archive.

That is a great composition of figures. I work in a similar way in planning the next bit as I progress of a painting rather that before I start. Ill be interested to see how you develop this

Thanks Diana. The painting is finished as it's signed. However, the process of doing this one has got me thinking about how to do others and with which emphasis and themes.

Great way of working Gudrun

These are the Sami people in Lapland in their traditional costumes gathered together for something. Gudrun, you have created a beautiful atmosphere where the vast empty land surrounds its people and helps them to take what the life gives and takes.

Indeed it is Satu. Thanks for your appreciation. As usual I am stretching my interpretation and presentation of my subject that, if you examine it, will hopefully make you think about why it has been painted like that. I have a mix of subjects in my photo archive to work with. I am also using inspiration from other artists, alive and dead(!). There is so much out in the world to draw on that can allow you as an artist to forge your own path and develop you own voice. It's exciting.

And thank you Dennis. Yes, I am all for a fluid approach, much like the movement in my dancers and figures and portraits, which will always feature in my work.

I love the sparsity of brushstrokes, looks very good to me as is.

There is a story to be told here Gudrun, I look forward to the next chapter.

Thank you Fiona. Yes, there is more. I shall be having happy hours in the studio!

60x50cm oil on canvas, unframed. Now being an impatient sort of person I have not waited for the optimum time to photograph. It is a December afternoon .... I am enjoying exploring the possibilities presented by my archive of photos. As I paint and study references, new ideas arise. It is exciting and I am much inspired.

About the Artist
Gudrun Ståhl Sharpley

"The good painter has to paint two principal things, that is to say, man and the intention of his mind. The first is easy and the second difficult, because the latter has to be represented through gestures and movements of the limbs." (MK388) From: Leonardo da Vinci: The Graphic Work, p16, J…
