Well it does seem a shame that no one has commented...I cannot add any critique, I'm not that much of an artist but I rather like it none the less...I'm glad you said there is mist on the left. It seems to capture the spirit of the scene...keep on painting and posting them here...

Phil, Thanks so much for your affirming comment. Not having had any other comments, I'd really forgotten the post thinking the picture was lost somewhere in the past. I'm so glad you liked it and hope others will as well.

Your sketch does convey the feeling of a rainy day, plus the sharp edges and colour of the tower really draw the eye. (Your entry inspired me to submit my meagre effort painted on my own recent holiday !)

James, thank you for your appreciative words. I can't think of a more satisfying response than one that says one of my paintings has inspired someone to go and do likewise! I'm so glad you have posted. I'll go have a look!

Hi James, I would say that the composition is based on the rule of thirds, so the eye is drawn towards the spire which is sitting a third way up from the bottom and a third way in from the left. This is reinforced by using bright red and green together at the point of interest. As they are complementary colours, they enhance each others chroma which also draws the eye to the same point. This is a classic element of composition and seems to me to have been very well executed. Thanks for showing us.

A blushing spire amid an emerald storm. I particularly like the flow of earthy organic hues around the layers of geometric forms- I believe this balance of "civlized order" and natural chaos adds a lot to your rendition. The ample white lends a bright mood, and allows the colors to voice beautifully. Well done!

Rod. thanks for your observations. Most of us paint by instinct after a few years and don't consciously think of the ingredients that make a pleasing painting. It's easy to slide into sloppy work and not remember what went wrong! Your observations and those others have made will help keep me "on track" as I compose and paint in the future! Thanks for taking time to write.

Huge apologies for the ridiculous &quot;dddd&quot; comment! The new site didn&#39;t seem to have allowed my sign-in, also I thought it would behave in the way the old one did, and allow me the benefit of a review/edit before posting!<br />Nevertheless, I do like your sky and I think that the diagonal flow of the red/green complementary colours works really well

This is actually a watercolor sketch done in an American Journey watercolor journal. I was sitting in the window of my hotel watching the sun break back through late in the afternoon of a grey, rainy day in the town of Vers sur la Lot, France. Though it is hard to wet paper in a watercolor journal, I wanted to get some soft edges to balance the hard edges and communicate areas of mist. Any responses are welcome, but I would particularly be interested in critiques using the classic elements and principles of design.
